GOLF COURSE DESIGN
Having played so many of the world’s top golf courses Sam has developed a keen eye for good golf course design. Brought up on the west coast of Scotland Sam’s design philosophies have largely been influenced by the historic links courses of that area, such as Troon, Prestwick and Turnberry, and this traditional approach is clearly evident in his work on the Torrance Course at Fairmont St Andrews, close to the home of golf. The quality of the Torrance Course was recognized when it was selected as a qualifying venue for The Open Championship in 2010 and it was the host of the Senior Scottish Open between 2009 and 2014.
Currently Sam is building an exciting new course in the Netherlands at The Dutch. The course will incorporate many ‘links’ features such as pot bunkers and several burns and has been designed to provide plenty of fun and excitement, an important factor when trying to make golf more attractive to a new generation of golfers. As such the golf course will incorporate a number of short par 4's that will put the emphasis on accuracy rather than length. Sam is a great believer that his courses must be playable for the average or above average golfer and should not be designed purely for the tournament player.
Sam has developed a close partnership with European Golf Design, a company located close to Sam’s home in Sunningdale, allowing him to closely follow the progress of his projects through both design and construction. European Golf Design has earned a reputation for designing successful golf courses of all types which are consistently highly rated by golfers and the golf press alike.
